Peeter Kaups

Born in Estonia in 1923, Peeter Kaups came to Canada in 1948 via Finland and Sweden.

He received his education at Treffner Private Boys' School and Tallinn Reaal School in Estonia, Stockholm's Technical Institute in Sweden and the Military Academy in Finland. He has also taken Business Administration courses at the University of Toronto, attended evening art courses in North York and taken a number of watercolour courses with Dominic DiStefano, Claude Croney, Ray Loose, Brian Atyeo, Frank Webb, Don Dennis, John Galluci, Betty Lou Schlemm and others.

Kaups has exhibited his work in more than 20 one-person shows in Toronto and two in Vancouver. He has participated annually in Toronto Watercolour Society Juried Shows and in shows organized by the Society of Estonian Artists in Toronto. He has earned three awards from the Toronto Watercolour Society and is a signature member. He has belonged to the Society of Estonian Artists in Toronto since 1991 and is presently the Society's Vice-President.

Kaups participated in EKKT's Exhibition in Tallinn at Kastellaanimaja Gallery during Esto '96 and officiated at the opening. In 1997 he received the Toronto Canada Day Award for his contribution to culture in art.

Kaups works in water media, monotype and felt pen. His subject matter includes northern landscapes, rural scenes, city and buildings and sea coasts in America, Estonia and Finland. He has sold more than 500 paintings, which can now be found in private collections as well as in corporate offices and in the offices of various organizations.

Sündinud Eestis 1923.a. Saabus Kanadasse 1948.a. läbi Soome ja Rootsi.

Oppis Hugo Treffneri Eragümnaasiumis ja Tallinna Reaalkoolis, Stockholmi Tehnilises Instituudis, Soome Armee Ohvitseride Koolis ja Toronto Ulikoolis business administration'i õhtukursustel.

Oppis kunsti North York'is õhtukursustel, hiljem tuntud USA ja Kanada akvarellistide Dominic DiStefano, Claude Croney, Ray Loose'i, Brian Atyeo, Frank Webb'i, Don Dennis'i, John Galluci, Betty Lou Schlemm'i ja teiste suvekursustel. On korraldanud enam kui 20 isiklikku näitust Torontos ja 2 Vancouveris.

On osalenud Toronto Watercolour Society zÿürii-aastanäitustel ja Eesti Kunstnike Koondise Torontos näitustel. On saanud 3 tunnustus-auhinda Toronto Watercolour Society näitustel ja on selle organisatsiooni "signature member". On olnud Eesti Kunstnike Koondise Torontos liige alates 1991. aastast ja on praegu selle organisatsiooni aseesimees.

Osales koondise näitusel Tallinna Kastellaanimaja galeriis Esto 1996 raames ja esindas koondist selle pidulikul avamisel, millest võtsid osa Eesti valitsuse esindajad, Eesti TV ning pressiesindajad.
Kultuurilise ja kunstilise tegevuse eest anti talle Toronto Canada Day teenetemedal 1997.a.

Töötab akvarelli-, monotüüpia ja suletehnikas. Loominguteemadeks on põhjamaa maastikud, vanad talud ja ehitused, linnavaated, rannikualad Põhja-Ameerikas, Eestis ja Soomes. Enam kui 500 P. Kaupsi maali on eraisikute, firmade ja mitmete organisatsioonide omanduses.
